Gamechangers

Journalism is a field where one person can make a difference.

CBS News legend Edward R. Murrow, who reported live from rooftops during the London Blitz, and in the 1950s challenged Senator McCarthy's Red scares. The closing words of his broadcasts, "Good night, and good luck," became his byline.

Dan Rather, another CBS newsman, in 1963 reported from the hospital in Dallas that President Kennedy had died. Later, he filed reports from the jungles of Vietnam, that helped to inform Americans about what was going on there.

Tom Wolfe, a master stylist, helped to create an entirely new way of writing news with his works "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" and "The Right Stuff." He inspired a generation of writers, reporters, and magazines like Rolling Stone.

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, reporters for The Washington Post, looked into a sleepy police report of a burglary at the Watergate Hotel, and their reports led them directly to the Oval Office, forcing a sitting President of the United States to resign.

The Spotlight team at The Boston Globe, has worked since the 1970s to investigate and report on matters of critical public interest, including (famously) reports of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. This team of exemplary reporters and editors is renowned for its work.

Assignment: We're working on presentations of important and notable figures in American journalism and the information industry. Who are you looking into? Share your topic and some interesting information from your findings so far. Your post must be at least 200 words. Each team please note your names on the post.  Due date: by the end of class on Thursday, April 20.

Upon my research the journalist my partner and I selected was Thomas Brokaw. The reason why we selected him is because he is very articulate and is fascinated with reporting. What me and my partner found is that Thomas Brokaw does not like fake news. He feels that is a reporter is going to report something then the facts has to fit with the scenario. Honestly Thomas Brokaw is one of the undisputed journalist of all times; the reason why is because as a journalist he won every single journalism award. That is what makes him very significant in the field of journalism.
Another thing we found out is that, while he was in high school he became convinced to become a broadcast journalist. Therefore after high school he moved to Iowa and attended the University of Iowa and from there he quickly began his career as a nightly news anchor for KITV. Unfortunately Thomas Brokaw left the University of Iowa only because he was unable to keep up with his studies, so therefore he decided to go back home and attended the University of South Dakota. What intrigued me the most was how he got married in 1962 to Meredith Lynn and still graduated in 1964 with a degree in Political Science. Now, despite him getting a degree in Political science he still continued his career as a journalist. As a journalist he covered many things including 9/11, Watergate Scandal, The Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Challenger explosion. That is why my partner and I chosen Thomas Brokaw for our presentation.

  2. My partner and I chose to do a presentation about Thomas Brokaw because he is one of the best news broad castors in America. Thomas Brokaw did a lot in his life journey. He was born on January 6, 1940 in Webster, South Dakota. Thomas Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow in August 2013. He wrote a lot of books about his life for example “A lucky life interrupted and Boom”. He was the first Journalism that interviewed the President Vladimir Putin in Russia. He was the first one to receive the George Catlett Marshall Medal of Honor. He was involved with the suspension of Brian Williams, who is also a news broadcaster about him lying in 2003. Thomas Brokaw wasn’t too happy when President Donald Trump announced that NBC, CNN and others news television station were providing fake news. Thomas Brokaw felt that people would lose credibility for those channels. He covered the “Watergate Scandal” about the 37 president was an accomplice with the two buglers who stole some important information. He covered the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion that exploded 1 minute 13 seconds after lift off. He covered the fall of the “Berlin Wall” during the cold war across Eastern Europe. He covered the terrorist September 11, 2001 attack on New York City landmark Twin Towers. He announced the death of Tim Russert who was broadcasting the news.

For my team’s presentation we will be focusing and covering Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson is a very interesting man because while some people are fans of him, others despise him. Some of you may know Thompson as being the founder of the style of journalism that is heatedly debated often called gonzo journalism. Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism that is written without claims of objectivity, often including the reporter as part of the story via a first-person narrative. With this style of journalism, Thompson went on to publish what first made him famous, “Hell’s Angels”. For his research on the book he had spent a year living and riding with the Angels, experiencing their lives and hearing their stories first-hand. He became a counter cultural icon. Following the breakthrough of his first big hit, Thompson went on to write a book which eventually turned into an American classic movie called “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. “Fear and Loathing” was a cult classic with an all-star cast including Johnny Depp, and Benicio Del Toro, and directed by Terry Gilliam in 1998. The film was a rumination on the failure of the 1960s counterculture movement.

  5. For my presentation I have decided to research and present on woman that I actually have done projects on in previous classes, Rachel Carson. The first project I did on her was in 8th grade and I have never forgotten her. She is an incredible woman whose writing helped to advance the global environmental movement. She was a writer, scientist, and ecologist who worked for the US Bureau of Fisheries while freelance writing on the side. She began a fifteen year career in the federal service as a scientist and editor in 1936 and rose to become Editor- in- Chief of all publications for the US Fish and WIldlife Service. She wrote pamphlets on conservation and published multiple award winning studies such as The Sea Around Us. In 1952, Carson resigned from the government to focus on her writing full time. She wrote many articles all with intention of educating people about the beauty and importance of the environment and our role in conserving it. Her mission is very similar to mine which is why I have always been drawn to her work and her story. To me, she is an incredibly honorable journalist, scientist, ecologist, and person as she spent her life taking measures to create a better, more sustainable world. She urged to her readers that as human beings we are only one component of nature but we are the only component with the power to consciously alter the environment, and with that power comes great responsibility. This mission is one that I wish to continue in my life. In World War II, when the use of synthetic pesticides became more well known and common, Carson was disgusted and altered her mission to raising awareness about the incredibly harmful effects of this on humans and on the environment. In 1962, she wrote her famous book Silent Spring in which she challenged the practices of agricultural scientists and the government and called for a drastic change in the way that humankind views the natural world. This is exactly what I wish to do as a journalist which is why I look up to this woman so much. Carson was actually attacked by some chemical industries and some people in the government for being an alarmist but she simply said that she only wishes to have humans reconsider and understand the role that we play in the natural world. In 1963, she testified before Congress to and called for new policies to protect human health and the environment. She unfortunately passed away in 1964 after a lifelong battle against breast cancer. She continues to inspire me and I cannot wait to follow in her footsteps in utilizing the written word to advocate for the natural world.

For our presentation we chose Diane Sawyer because of how well know and her achievements in journalism. Diane Sawyer was born in December 22nd, 1945 And is from Glasgow, KY Went to school in Louisville and attended Seneca High School she was the Chief editor of her school Newspaper entitled The Arrow.  In College She received A Bachelor Of Arts in 1967 with a major in English from Wellsley College and she Attended one semester of law school at the University of Louisville before switching to journalism. After Attending school she had multiple jobs including a weather forecaster for WLKY-TV in Louisville and was promoted to a general-assignment post. Later in life she moved to washington D.C. could not find the job she wanted while she was looking for work in the government. Shortly after she then became and assistant to jerry warren’s deputy secretary. This job included thing like wrote press releases and quickly advanced in just a few months. She also wrote some of president Richard Nixon’s public statements. There is a lot of information surrounding Diane and it should be fairly easy to create a presentation on her with more information.

  7. For my presentation I am working on a power point for Giuliana Rancic. She is mainly known for being the long time anchor for E news on the Entertainment network alongside Ryan Seacrest. Although she is more of an entertainment journalist I have always found her story very inspiring and relatable. She has overcome many obstacles in her life such as scoliosis, pregnancy troubles, and breast cancer. She is now retired from doing Enews and is currently filming her reality show with her husband Bill Rancic. Although she is no longer the anchor for E She does still co host the fashion police with Melissa Rivers, and host the big important red carpets with Ryan Seacrest as well. Her hard work and dedication is surely going to leave a legacy behind and that is something that as an aspiring journalist I can look up to. An interesting source I will be using is the documentary filmed based on her life called “ E true hollywood story”. Watching this made me really want to do my presentation on her and I will be sharing some clips of this in class. I look forward to sharing my research with all of you and sitting in your audience as well.

  8. For my presentation, I am researching Steve Jobs. Some interesting information about him is before he founded Apple, he went to India for a period of time in 1974. He went with an eventual Apple employee, Daniel Kottke. He went in search of spiritual enlightenment. He stayed for seven months and left India. He came back to the US and changed his whole look. He shaves his head and wore Indian clothing. Jobs became practitioners of Zen Buddhism through Zen master Kobun Chino Otogawa. He lived in his parents’ backyard toolshed. He completely transformed it into a mini house for himself. He became involved with meditations and considered taking up residence in Japan. Also, while in India, he experimented with LSD and he said it was “one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life”. I also found interesting how he dropped out of college but it’s no secret you don’t need college to be successful. He had a GPA of 2.65 and admitted that he never liked school and preferred unconventional ways. Jobs kept his annual salary at $1. He had 5.5 million shares of Apple stock and was the shareholder of Disney stock. I’m excited to research and learn more about him. I find him to be interesting. Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011. He was 56 years old

  9. I am researching about Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin is very interesting because he was known as one of the Founding Fathers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, but he's done more than that. Only having two years of formal education Franklin joined his family candle and soap making business. As a teenager Franklin anonymously submitted essays and commentaries as a widow aliased as “Silence Doogood”in The New-England Courant which was created in 1721, by his brother James Franklin. His columns were wildly popular and even received marriage proposals from eligible bachelors. He wrote about fashion, marriage, women’s rights and even religion. He even became a fashion icon in France and trademarked the French conception of how they saw American fashion. He portrayed Americans as rustic frontiersman, he dressed in plain clothes and wore a fur hat. The fur hat became his sort of trademark and appeared in countless French portraits. Franklin owned the Pennsylvania Gazette and published “Poor Richard’s Almanack”, which made him rich enough to go into retirement at 42 and spend his the rest of his 42 years studying science and creating inventions. There are many other things about Benjamin Franklin which I never knew of and found it interesting that this one man did so much in his lifetime.

  10. For my presentation, Antonia and i are doing research on the famous Peter Jennings. Jennings was a great journalist of many accolades and was the head anchor on ABC News for decades. I learned that he dropped out of high school when he was a young boy growing up in Canada. He has many accolades like covering disputes of Desert Storm in the Middle East and even staying live for 15 hours to cover the Gulf War. I learned that he was a very intelligent man and knew how to ease listeners and relax to feel comfortable in certain situations. He was promoted to the sole anchor of World News Tonight, which is a huge moment for his career and an opportunity to grow as a journalist and anchor. Jennings passed away in 2005 from lung cancer. He had received lung cancer just four months before and after a hard fought battle he was found dead in his apartment in New York City. He is remembered forever for his accolades and the way he presented himself on camera. I personally remember him when I was a kid and once I heard his voice I was instantly reminded of being a kid in Yonkers on a summer night while my grandma was watching TV .

  11. Tom Wolfe is best known as a journalism pioneer and a best selling author.Tom Wolfe was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, in a middle-class family. His father, Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Sr., was an agricultural scientist, and his mother, Louise, a landscape designer. Both parents with great education encouraged Tom from a young age to pursue his writing interests. Tom Wolfe was always a smart kid. When deciding on colleges he turned down an offer to attend Princeton University and instead went to Washington and Lee University and graduated in 1951. He was an excellent baseball player so after he graduated he tried to pursue that a little. He then tried out for the New York Giants but then was eventually cut. Tom Wolfe interested me most because out of all the best journalists to ever live to me he seemed like the most average Joe of all. It was cool to see the things Tom Wolfe brought to the world of journalism such as writing style and other cool things.
