Bridget Hargrove of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, her four-year-old son Ayden and one-year-old daughter, Emma, wade in a baby pool away from the oil contaminated Gulf of Mexico on Grand Isle beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana May 21, 2010. Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle said the town has closed its beach due to the presence of oil on the beach. For more than a month, tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day have been gushing from BP's broken Deepwater oil well situated in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst oil spill in U.S. History. 1. Bob Dylan sang, "the times they are a changing" and that certainly is true today. With the popularity of the cell phone/camera, students "sexting" each other is a new common occurence between teens 13-17 years old. Who would have thought that this would be a common practice that is against the law?
The teens are now facing criminal charges for this "innocent" behavior. In Harrisburg, Pa. eight students have learned their lesson the hard way. According to the Perry County District Attorney, Charles Chenot, "when you take a photograph of yourself or somebody else nude and send it to somebody else, you've committed a crime." Even though the child pornography law was originally enacted to stop and/or prosecute predators, the district attorneys have extended the law to prohibit sexting between teenagers.
Former U.S,. Rep. Don Bailey, a Harrisburg civil rights attorney is contesting this issue. "Should they be crimes at all?", he asks and says,"it is an inappropriate application of the law." Where do our civil rights play in this matter? Does the government have the right to dictate our right to give friends a picture (whether it is a nude or clothed photo)of ourselves? We are being micro governed more and more each day. Considering that 25% of all teens are sexting, according to MTV and The Associated Press polls, the courts are going to become very busy hearing this new kind of case.
Another type of change is the invention of the new Apple iPhone 4g, updates to the Company's popular iPad and Macintosh computers and some new software. To introduce their new products, Apple has presented them at their annual conferences.
One change the whole country is seeking is the job market and the state of the economy. Analysts predicted more new jobs would have been created. Instead, less jobs were created, the stock market fell and prices for goods and products traded fell greatly. Because of this decline, there is fear that spending will decrease and that will lead to lower company profits. Everyone is nervous...everyone except President Obama. He feels the jobs report shows a good sign that the economy is getting stronger. He must know something noone else knows. According to Paul Ashworth, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics,"the economic outlook is improving but the recovery is still pretty tepid." Who should we listen to? Will it really improve as quickly as we would like to believe? Only time will tell.
Technology advancement is a good thing in most cases. The inventions Apple is making will help create jobs. The court cases and police work involved in solving the "sexting" teens will also create jobs. Let's hope we can get back on our feet soon and become the strongest nation once again.
