  • What website or print publication do the stories appear in?
  • Where on the page exactly are they?
  • How would you describe the writing style?
  • Do the stories have ancillaries and talkback features like comments? What do these add to the story?

  1. Recently In the news I've been reading about different news stories that had to do with the New Nintendo console that was released earlier this month. One of the main stories I have been following is about a new pokemon game that was rumored to come out after the release of the system. There were tons of speculation up until the actual nintendo switch release. After everything went silent. Now yesterday I found an article on Polygon talking about how Gamefreak (the company that makes the pokemon games) is hiring and how the descriptions for the jobs vaguely sound like they are implying a pokemon title. An opportunity to be involved in the development of the worldwide popular RPG,” says the job posting. “Since it is a title that has been released for a long time, the development environment is also very well set.” This description can only mean pokemon because that is the only RPG franchise that the company owns.
Another interesting article that Ive been reading has to do with apple. I read on Sciencetimes website that some of the specs of the new iPad pro that is coming out later this month. One of the most interesting features from a design stand point was the fact that they are saying that the new iPad will have an almost completely bezels less design which is a crazy idea because apple has always been known to have bezels on their products. Another interesting thing that i read would be that the new iPad pro 12.9 inch model will have the same processor than the one that is currently in this generations iPad pro 9.5 inch tablet. I think this is odd because apple typically doesn't repeat using the same chips from models before so I think that if this rumor is true, it isn't a very smart choice.

  2. I was checking out the sports section of the New York Times and stumbled across a bunch of things. One of the the two major stories at the top were concerning the NFL free agency action. Although the season only ended a little about a month ago, teams are always looking to modify the team for the upcoming season. Whether, it be signing new available players with high talent, or cutting some people to save more money in the long run, there are many moves being made. One of the articles referring to the newest deal the Minnesota Vikings just made with the former Oakland Raider running back Latavius Murray. The other story was focusing on a big rumour that can make a rather large impact in the NFL. It was concerning the retired Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Due to the move that was made by the Vikings that I previously stated, the Raiders are in desperate need for a new running back. So the organization in Oakland thought of no better candidate to join the team than Oakland's very own Marshawn Lynch. He would be a great fit and is younger than some of the running backs currently in the league. The structure of these articles are pretty straightforward, they stick to the facts and get quotes directly from the source. Also they try not to get too caught up in what people are supposed to know and they format it so anyone can read it and fully comprehend what they are talking about. There was no comment or feedback section because this is more of an informative type of piece with just facts on the latest news in the NFL.

  3. Whenever I read about the news, I mostly read about music, technology, the newest technology, beauty products or anything that catches my eye. Recently in the news, I’ve been reading about the new rumors about the iPhone 8. Ever since the iPhone 7 came out, there was talk about the 8. There are so many rumors about the iPhone 8 being more squared, being an all glass model, no headphone jack and even talk about doing away with the fingerprint/home button. I’ve also read that the iPhone 8 might look like or have a similar shape to the original iPhone. The round and curvy shape on the old iPhone was sustainable if dropped. I usually look on mashable.com for new technology news or new gadgets. You can almost always find news and rumors abut the iPhone 8 right on their front page. Articles about the new iPhone are almost always presented in a click bait way. They will have an eye catching title and when you click into it, it’s something you already knew or not THAT important. The articles are usually presented with just basic facts about iPhones and then maybe one or two sentences about the actual new model. Even though it’s almost always the same, I still like reading up on it and see what they have to say. Mashable has a story on Snapchat. You can click through it and see different articles but on their actual website, they have much more. On the website itself, you can share the article to Facebook or Twitter or any social media site and from there, you can post comments about it.
Another article I found interesting was on refinery29.com. It’s also on Snapchat but the actual site, like Mashable, has many other articles and topics. The one I found interesting is called “11 Korean Beauty Buys You Still Haven’t Tried”. I love these articles because I love reading about the latest beauty products and mostly for skincare and facial products. The article talks about each product, ingredients, how to use and where to buy it and how much it costs. I love it because it’s easy and straightforward. The site itself is set up with different topics on the top and the latest news or stories on the front page. On Refinery29, you can share the article to numerous social media sites and if you scroll down, you can comment on the article and give feedback.

  5. With the hearing before the House Intelligence Committee taking place today that involved James Comey and Mike Rogers, I thought it would be interesting to see how different well known news sources would report on the hearing. Before I visited any major news website I knew the two main outcomes of the hearing were that the FBI is investigating Trump and Russia links as well as there being no evidence to support Trump’s wiretap claim. I decided I would check Fox News and CNN since many people on the left feel as if Fox News is biased and many people on the right feel as if CNN is biased. Located at the top of the Fox News website large capitalized bold letters read: ‘NO COLLUSION’ White House stands its ground after Russia probe confirmed by Comey. In the focus paragraph of this article the author states both of the two main outcomes of the hearing. The story mostly dealt with how the Press Secretary Sean Spicer is responding to the hearing rather than the hearing itself, but halfway through it does mention that Comey stated he has “no information” in support of Trump’s claims that the Obama administration was wiretapping him. It is not mentioned until towards the end of the story that both Rogers and Comey confirmed there is no evidence of Russian hackers fixing votes in swing states. After I finished reading the article I noticed that the author went more into detail about the Russian ties rather than the wiretapping and used many quotes throughout the article. At the bottom of the article and under the sponsored videos tab a comment section exists that is defaulted to sort comments by newest added. However, CNN seemed more interested in there being “no information” regarding the wiretapping rather than the Russian/Trump ties. On the top page of the CNN website a large bold title reads: “FBI director: No wiretap evidence found”. Just like the Fox News article this one states the two main outcomes of the hearing in the focus paragraph. Unlike the Fox article, this author first dealt with there being “no information” suggesting a wiretapping occurred. Another difference was that this article was more geared towards the hearing while the other article was more so about the White House’s response to the hearing. Throughout this article the idea that Putin clearly supported Trump was repeated and that Comey could even back that belief. What I noticed from the CNN article was that it did not use as many quotes or have a comment section, but it did try to focus on both of the main takeaways from the hearing although it left out no evidence of hacking done by the Russians being found in swing states which I personally thought was really important.

  6. I do not really follow too much news, but when I do I like to read about art, books, music, crazy things that seem impossible, or cute light hearted articles, such as a story I found on CBS News. On March 16, 2017 in Alabama a little 8-year-old girl wrote a book. I found the story towards the bottom of the page and it looks like not many had seen it. The story has no comments on it, but I found it very easy to read and the title is super cute. The article itself uses a lot of quotes from the child which are nice and funny to read. I found this story about Nia Mya Rees really cute because it had to do with this little girl and her accomplishments. It was interesting to hear about something other than Trump and this story was very refreshing and light. This girl wrote a book on how to care and feed her little brother. Telling CBS that it only took a few days to write the book and even the town mayor showed up for her book signing. She titled the book “How To Deal With And Care For Your Annoying Little Brother”, and it is now on Amazon's best seller list for books on parenting. Other stories like one I found on sunnyskyz.com, a site I have never heard of till now, has positive and upbeat articles. One that I found was about China approving a national park, a sanctuary for endangered big cats, the Amur leopard and the Siberian tiger. I love animals and something like this is very interesting to hear because it involves saving animals who've been hunted and killed and now are being protected. Increasing their commitment and effort on banning the ivory trade. I found this story on the first page at the bottom of the page. This article was short and straight to the point. It informed its readers with exactly what was needed. It painted a picture for them when they said the park will be 5,600 square miles which it was compared as 60 percent larger than Yellowstone to give the readers a clear picture of how big it'll be. It mentions how China has gotten the biggest polluters to become global investors in green technology, helping out the environment. This particular article only had two comments on, but at least there is an acknowledgement that there are some people willing to write these comments and share what they thought of the article.

  7. While I was away in Houston and Austin, Texas, I was able to do some reading on certain articles that interested me greatly. I was visiting South By South West, which is a huge music festival in Austin, Texas. I met up with a lot of great artists and people while I was down there. I found an interesting article on Paste Magazines front page online that explains how Austin is the fastest growing city in Texas and currently the fourth largest in Texas. The article states how throughout the week that the festival takes place almost half a million people flood the streets either performing on the corners or at multiple venues right next door to each other. While I was reading about this I was experiencing it as well, which was quite an amazing experience. I was backstage at multiple venues even late at night and at around 1 am walking around I still saw people performing on the corner with cups filled with coins and change. Its interesting how this article portrays what Austin, Texas holds very close to them. This festival brings culture and media together. It represents music as a whole and to have articles like this covering it made me realize what kind of special place it really was. Another article I found on the SXSW page itself was a venue that hosted competitive gaming, which I found awesome. Not only do y ou have tons of musicians and thousands of people roaming the streets but you have places that host competitive gaming and to me those are two of my favorite things. The article showed how people would meet up at the venue and play for tournaments in Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Ultra Street Fighter, Dragon Ball Z, and etc. I did not get to see this live but next year when I am there I will most definitely catch that as well. These articles allow you to comment at the bottom, which I think bring a strong influence to the reader, because it helps the reader, become connected to the article and it shows that their opinion has a value to the writer. I think that shows a strong message and a positive impact on the articles outcome along with the feedback.

  8. I came across an article about President Trumps plan to greatly reduce the role that climate change plays in governmental decisions which appears on reuters.com. This is an international news headquarters based in London, England. The story appears under the politics section of the agencies website and is written in a very unbiased, informational way. The author plainly presents the information regarding Trump's recent decisions in regard to climate change and cites Bloomberg's report of this same issue. This story does not include a comments section. I think that adding a comments section could be very helpful since the story itself is purely very informational. The comments could allow the reader to dive deeper into the presented information by reading what people’s different opinions are.
I also recently came across an article from Fox News, published on March 13, 2017 covers the recent protest by a local environmentalist group in California. It was discovered on Sunday morning that this group of 5 people carved the phrase, “no tigers no woods” into the green of the fifth hole on trumps golf course. Environmentalists are currently very upset with trump's recent proposals to cut EPA spending by 25%. This story can be found in the “Trump’s first 100 days” section of the Fox News website. This article is written in a very matter of fact way. It reports the event and the background behind the intentions of this activist group. I believe it is very unbiased and is not written in a way that it pushing any certain agenda. This story also does not include a comments section but, again, I believe that adding this feature would contribute to the reader’s experience. The comments would give the reader a better understanding of the story as people would give their opinions on the situation, offering the reader more information on this specific incident as well as the greater issue at hand.

  9. The first article that grabbed by attention was on the side tab of ABCnews.com that read “Chicago teen apparently gang rapped on face book live”. That title alone is enough for anyone to take a second look. I was aware of the striking high crime rates and murders still happening in Chicago in 2017. Compared to the rest of America Chicago defiantly has a bad reputation but this crime in my opinion was absolutely corrupt. ABC reported a 15-year-old Chicago girl was apparently sexually assaulted by five or six men or boys on Face book Live, and none of the 40 people who watched the live video reported the attack to police. Authorities learned about the attack when the girl’s mother reported her daughter missing and had screen grabs of the incident that took place on Thursday night. Since then an investigation has been launched and face book officials have been contacted. For society this should be a real eye opener to the dangers of over using social media for heinous crimes, attention and or money. The second story that caught my eye was titled “Tomi lahren suspended by the Blaze” She is an American television and online video host and a conservative political commentator. During the 2016 election of Donald trump she was extremely vocal about her conservative views to her huge online and TV followers. She has been suspended because of her views on abortion. She said she was pro choice and that the government should stay out of our guns and shouldn’t dictate what women due to their bodies. The extremely republican show The Blaze didn’t take to the host’s opinion and suspended her until further notice. This grabbed my attention because Tomi is known for her disapproval of the black lives matter movement and thing like Obama care as well as supporting the Travel ban. The fact that she gets suspended for being pro-choice was absolutely shocking to me .

  10. A huge news story that really has my attention is a retired Haverstraw Police Department Officer has committed suicide after being pulled over by the FBI in connection to a quadruple homicide and a kilo-weight distribution of cocaine. Retired Haverstraw Police Officer Gerard Benderoth, who was also known as a competitive weight lifter, committed suicide Wednesday morning after being pulled over by the FBI agents, not far from Thiells Elementary School, police confirmed. The officer had shot himself in the head before the federal agents even got to his vehicle. The officer was being investigated in connection with former Briarcliff Manor Police Officer Nicholas Tartaglione. The latter was arrested in December in the murder of four Orange County men – Martin Santos-Luna, Miguel Sosa-Luna, Urbano Morales-Santiago, and Hector Gutierrez – who had all disappeared months before. Tartaglione was also arrested on allegations that he was selling cocaine. It is believed that at least one of the victims was involved in drug trafficking. Tartaglione was arrested a couple months prior after the bodies were discovered in the backyard of his vacation home a couple counties away. The FBI were closing in on Officer Benderoth but the officer had taken matter into his own hands and killed himself near Thiells Elementary. This information was found in the New York times as well as Lo-hud and CBS. “If this guy put a bullet in his head rather than go and talk to them, he must have been in deep,” a law enforcement source noted to The Post. Officers had tried earlier Wednesday to grab Benderoth at his ranch home in Stony Point in Rockland County, where he lived with his wife, Amy, and their four children. Not finding him there, agents caught up with him one town south and some 15 minutes away, on windy Rosman Road. Seeing flashing lights behind him, Benderoth called his former colleagues at the Haverstraw Police Department. “Why are you pulling me over?” he asked, according to sources. But Haverstraw cops told him it wasn’t them. He stopped his SUV within sight of a church and up the street from an elementary school — and fatally shot himself before the agents could make it to his vehicle, sources said.
